Kate Durbin is killing it with these videos. Its as if walking through Disneys Haunted Mansion and confronting the ghost of Disneys aesthetic ethos coming to inhabit itself. That is to say, it is as if the theme park were simultaneously killed and haunted by its own being. These are so unsettling, I suppose, because you dont know if you are inhabiting Disneys pop-cultural (non-)reality or confronting the specter of its dead zombie. You feel as if you are surrounded by the accouterments of your Disneyfied childhood, yet are also being taunted by its apocalyptic future, coming to haunt you in your present. This is all quite appropriate for Kates Dynasty Channel from E! Entertainment, which is a series of poetic still-lives of scenes from Dynasty, a memento mori of/for/by pop of/for/by pop itself. I want to exist there, in this jarring in between, betwixt a feverish childhood dream and a pure, (un)refined apocalyptic future. Kate Durbin is the Incarnation and the Second Coming all rolled up into one, sold to you in a shinny wrapper in Frontier Land. -Roland Betancourt
