Kate had another busy day today. One of the staff on TCU were very kind to come with us for a small escape from the ward in the morning and afternoon. Kate was less nervous than yesterday, so hopefully she will shake off her fears of new places quickly. Kate had a larger tracheostomy tube inserted today and a procedure called a flexiscope. This was done in her room. The ENT clinical nurse came to upsize the tube. Then the ENT doctor put a tiny camera down her airway to make sure the new tube was a good fit. Kate was sooo good for it. I was very proud. She even got a bravery certificate. There was a concern that this big girl tube may be too big for Kate and she may lose her voice for a few months but luckily she was big enough to accommodate it and she was chatting and shouting at me minutes later. Kate also had music therapy today which she loves. And, she orally ate three good meals. While she was asleep I rushed into the city to pick up a few bits to make a sensory box for Kate. This is to expose her to different textures, sounds and visual stimulation as advised by the occupational therapist yesterday. So we had a fun afternoon playing with rice, pasta, pipecleaners, curlers, snowglobe, pompoms, brushes, fluffy cloths and flashing lights. It was nice to be doing something different. Tuesday is the day Kates consultant comes to the ward to do his round. He is very happy with her progress. A telephone meeting has been arranged with CUH next week to discuss Kates transfer to Cork in the coming weeks. So, fingers crossed. Xx
