Katelyn Marie Scharlow (July 21, 1988 - September 21, 2012) Katelyn “Katie” Marie Scharlow, age 24, died Friday evening September 21, 2012 at her home surrounded by her family and friends. She was born and raised in Reed City. Katie courageously battled cancer at the early age of 12. She won her first battle and enjoyed her middle school and high school years, graduating in the top 10 of Reed City High School class of 2007. Katie then attended Northwestern Michigan College and Ferris State University and was just a few credits short of her degree in Social Work. She was involved in numerous activities at school including sports, four years of Student Council, National Honor Society and loved to sing in the high school choir. Locally, Katie was the youngest member of the General Federation of Women’s Club of Reed City. Katie won the Miss Reed City Pageant in 2007 and organized and emceed the pageant each year since. One of her most recent goals was to run for city council. Her name is currently on the ballot in November. Katie loved life. When given her prognosis last spring she attacked life and began to work on her bucket list. She spent countless hours with her friends building many memories. She went to her favorite vacation spot of Tennessee where she was looking for her cowboy! A celebration of her life party was held in July that had over 400 people in attendance. Katie loved to party and have a good time with the people she loved. Katie will be dearly missed by her parents, Dave and Shelly, and her sister, Ashleigh, who she adored. She is also survived by her grandparents, Jack and Norma Scharlow; her aunts and uncles, Pat and Scott Reinert, Dave and Kris Griffin, Kathy Cuneo, Nancy and Jeff Jackson, and Kim and Bill Martinez; her loving cousins, Monique, Jason, Zack, Julianne, Jade, Angie, Allison, Elizabeth and Megan. Her entire family was a very important part of her life including her second cousins, Brad and Angie, and their families. Katie is preceded in death by her brother David, Grandma Abbott, Grandma Holmes and Great Aunt Julie. Katie also had a very special relationship with Dr. DeAnna Mitchell from DeVos Children’s Hospital. They had a mutual respect for one another that went beyond doctor/patient. They truly loved one another. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 25 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. The visitation and the funeral will both be held at the Reed City Church of the Nazarene. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Lake-Osceola State Bank in Reed City where a college scholarship fund in Katie’s honor will be set up for Reed City High School students.
