Kathy Kew Lee kicked off our Stewardship Campaign for 2015 last week, sharing how her family will reflect on SGC as another home to them, and their commitment to help nurture the church too: “When Larry and I were looking for a new church about two years ago, it was important to us to find a church community that would help our children learn about grace, love, and peace and that would give US the opportunity to strive for those things, as well. Our whole family has come to feel very comfortable here as part of the Spring Glen Church family. JJ has a zest for life that allows him to feel at home almost anywhere, but Daehyun takes a bit longer to warm up, and Im happy to say that he really considers church to be a second home for him, as well. He is delighted to come to Sunday School and nursery school here, and is usually disappointed on the four days a week that he DOESNT get to come to church. (Both of my boys tell me that Sunday is their favorite day of the week.) As a mom of two young kids, I spend a lot of my time nurturing others. The daily kind of nurturing that I do involves a lot of making meals that are somewhat nutritious and that my children will eat, finding missing shoes, and staying on top of homework assignments, but I dont always get to spend a lot of time working on spiritual or emotional growth. Most days I feel like were sort of getting through the day, making it work and doing our best. Coming to Spring Glen Church gives us all a place to nurture others and also to be nurtured. Sunday mornings in the pews are one of the few times in the week when I feel I can reliably sit in quiet reflection and take the time to think about something bigger than myself and my immediate family. And it is a wonderful feeling to know that Larry and I are part of a whole team of people helping to raise JJ and Daehyun in Gods love: Sunday school teachers, music teachers, caring ministers, and loving friends. In chapel the other week, the wonderful Laurie Bleickhardt talked with the children about intentional giving. Im a little embarrassed to admit that I hadnt thought much about having my kids bring their own offering to church each week and the message that it sends them. If you are six years old, you still have something to offer the church. We can all share our time, talent, and treasure with the church, and we should, because its our second home, and church gives US so much. JJ was delighted to receive his own offering envelopes and immediately got a quarter from his piggy bank to bring to church the next Sunday. Actually, it turns out that he really took a quarter from his BROTHERS piggy bank, although he claims it was only because he couldnt find his. I dont approach my giving to the church quite the same way as JJ, gleefully running for the nearest piggy bank. I have a bank account, and a budget in Quicken, and I try to make sure that at the end of each year weve put some money in our retirement accounts, saved for college, paid our bills, and given to the church. But this year Im going to try to think about my pledge as investing in our second home. We do a lot of our living and growing here, and the church nurtures us. Lets nurture our church home as it nurtures us.”
