Kathy and I went to see The Butler this afternoon. It is a really well done movie. The acting is great even though there are a few "surprise" actors in the rolls of various presidents and first ladies. The movie brought forward some deep memories of times and issues from the days of my youth. So many of my friends in college on the basketball team were black kids from both the South and from cities like St. Louis and Kansas City. They were treated horrendously in both overt acts of cruelty and covert acts of bigotry and discrimination. Yet, they were good guys and actually loved this country despite these things. I have no idea how I would have felt or acted had these things occurred to me. I hope everyone will go to this movie and take someone young and let them see it. I am hopeful that a discussion can result that will move all of us to a less divided place. The simple honor and character of the people portrayed in this film should remind us all that each person is just "that"--a person! Color has so little to do with who and what makes a person honorable and valuable. It also reminded me of the pride I had in this nation when a man of "color" became our president. There is nothing wrong with opposing his politics (if one does so) while celebrating his election.
