Kathy asks, Hi, all, Im looking on thoughts and info about note taking and gifted children, links please. Our PG 10 year old kiddo in 5th grade has just started science at school. He came home, frustrated, because the teacher said that part of the grade would be note-taking, and that if you didnt take notes, the highest grade you could receive is a C. He feels he is being penalized, once for knowing the material already (he is a science nut, years ahead), and next, for not needing to take notes when he doesnt know the material, because, in his words, I hear something once, and I know it. He tells me he is being punished for being smart. My husband and I are disagreeing on an approach to this. I think the teacher needs to be reminded (via GIEP, whatever) that she needs to differentiate and make the class more at his level, and I also thinking her grade for him should not be based on any note taking, perhaps. Partly because I dont think hell really learn how to take notes on material he already knows so well, and it sounds like pure torture for this kind of bright kiddo. My husband is concerned that hell grow up and never learn to take notes, and fail in college. I dont think our kiddo will be able to learn to take notes, until he is challenged appropriately (we are looking at some school changes for next year on that end). If you read up on executive function skills for gifted kids, disaster is predicted if you dont jump on it and get this right (at this age), which my husband is concerned about. I want to know why he wouldnt be able to learn this skill when he has too, in an appropriately levelled class. Im like, whats the big deal, it can wait. I am entertaining the idea of talking to the teacher, make sure she makes the class harder, but have him take notes on the harder material, however that looks. Thoughts, experiences with note taking?
