Katrin Gebbes deeply disturbing study of mans inhumanity is a testament to the power of faith as a young Christian virgin down on his luck is adopted into the horror of an abusive household. Gangling Julius Felmeier makes for a believable victim while Sascha Gersak is evil incarnate as the brute who rescues and then exploits him, attempting to wear down his faith with successive attacks. Although distressing to watch (the movie is based on a real-life incident), the power of young Tores conviction, and the solace his sacrifices offers to his tormentors step daughter, overrides the horrors inflicted upon him. This is a real horror movie: no demons or wacky serial killers, just the vileness of human behaviour left unchecked. If you can stomach it, I urge everyone to see this film: I spent a sleepless night pondering its implications. Highly recommended. 9/10.
