Generally, the differences that you can see are: grasshoppers and locusts (e.g. family Acrididae) have short antennae, are diurnal (active during the day) and the ovipositor on females (at the end of the abdomen and used for laying eggs) is small or not visible; while crickets and katydids (e.g. families Gryllidae and Tettigoniidae) have antennae often at least as long as their bodies, are nocturnal (active at night) and the females ovipositor is long and often very prominent. The differences you cant easily see just by looking are: grasshoppers and locusts have their ears on their abdomens and those that chirp do so by rubbing their hind leg against their forewing; whilst crickets and katydids have their ears on their forelegs and sing by rubbing their forewings together. Now, all locusts are grasshoppers, but not all grasshoppers are locusts. Locusts differ in their behavior which allows them to exist in swarms and also fly long distances, hence their economic significance for humans. Finally, cricket is played by two teams of eleven members, whilst What Katy Did is a book. Both are a lot of fun, but otherwise theyre totally different. ;-)
