Kaufmanns Department Store Clock at the corner of Smithfield Street and Fifth Avenue. The stores always decorated lavishly. Looking south down Smithfield Street. My post about Benno Janssens Buhl Building reminded me of another of his projects-La Tourelle in Fox Chapel, the home he designed for Edgar J. Kaufmann, the owner of Kaufmanns Department Store. However, the mere recall of the name Kaufmann, especially during this holiday season, conjures memories of the store which was as much a part of the fabric of the city as its banks, universities, and churches. It is with great poignancy that I post these familiar images of an age that is no more. Before the corporate homogenization of retail, visits to the great department stores were as much a part of the celebration of the holidays as carols and cookies. Oh how I miss those days!!!
