Kearney High School Recognized with Top Honors at FBLA National Leadership Conference in Nashville Kearney, NE, July 3, 2014—More than 10,000 of America’s best and brightest youth traveled to the historic city of Nashville to make some history of their own as they showcased their talents as future business leaders and vied for the opportunity to win over $165,000 in cash awards. Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL), the largest and oldest student business organization, held its National Leadership Conference in Nashville on June 29–July 2. Participants from across the United States and two countries were in attendance for this exciting conference to sharpen their core business skills, expand their networks, and participate in more than 60 business and business-related competitive events. Adrienne Cavill, Tianna Engen, and Abi Sheen from Kearney High School received national recognition at the FBLA Awards of Excellence on July 2. Cavill and Engen competed in Hospitality Management and brought home seventh place. The team completed an objective test and were announced as one of the Top 15 teams. In the final round the team prepared a response to a case study and role played the position of owners of a small catering business asked to complete a very large outdoor event with three judges. Abi Sheen along with Dylan Steinkruger, Minden High School; Anna Bauerle, Chase County High School; and Cody McCain, Tri-County High School competed as a team in the Parliamentary Procedure event and earned first place. The Parliamentary Procedure team members individually completed an objective test and then their test scores were averaged together. Their team score was one of the Top 15 averages to move them into the final round. In the final round of the Parliamentary Procedure event the team conducted a mock meeting following the Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th Edition. The Kearney High FBLA Chapter earned the Outstanding Chapter Award and the Gold Seal Award of Merit. Both awards require active participation by all chapter members in a variety of areas including community service, leadership development, and business or technology related content. The Gold Seal Award of Merit recognizes chapters in the Top 15% of their state. Advisers for the Kearney High Chapter are Tennille Gifford and Gary Stubbs. Tennille Gifford accompanied the students on this trip. The award was part of a comprehensive national competitive events program sponsored by FBLA-PBL that recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. For many students, the competitive events are the capstone activity of their academic careers. In addition to the competitions, students immersed themselves in educational workshops, visited an information-packed exhibit hall, and attended motivational keynotes on a broad range of business topics.
