Keep Scotland British THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BRITISH IDENTITY Why is the British identity so important? Simples. It has played a major part in guaranteeing 268 years of peace and political stability on our island. In 2,000 plus years the island of Great Britain has NEVER previously enjoyed such a long period of peace, as it has since the 1707 Union. The last battle on British soil was in 1746 - 268 years ago. But when identities clash, as they have on our neighbouring island, that clash is one of the causes of civil war, insurrection and terrorism.
