Keep the prayers coming!! Kevin update from Barb Dockendorf. Oct 24, 2014 1:53 PM Today we sat in while Kevin was having speech therapy at his bedside. He is able to correctly choose the correct answer from a list of choices when asked questions such as, where are you now? What is your name? What is todays date? (including the correct month, day and year) How old are you? (he wasnt given the correct answer and so he tried indicating his age wasnt there). He seems to be understanding most questions although he has difficulty verbally expressing himself; initiating and preforming the movements needed for speech. (apraxia) His therapist had him practice saying words that he eventually repeated fairly well after multiple attempts. She then tried to string some words together which was much more difficult for him. We were given some words that we could have Kevin try saying throughout the day. Lyle and I were impressed, however, at how much he has improved in just a few days! Others have noticied this as well. Kevin is also eating more and hasnt had any problems with the soft consistancy foods but only staff or family should give him food until he is able to manage textures better. A concern we had today was an area of swelling on Kevins left temple area (same side as his surgery) and he said it was painful. We had the nurse and doctor check it and he was then sent for a CT scan to see if anything was wrong or had changed. The results came back indicating that everything was fine; they attribute the tender area as fluid moving on that side post surgery and so for now he shouldnt lie on his left side until that resolves. The P.T. told us he did stepping exercises maintaining his balance and alternating his feet. They will soon work on stairs! He is becoming more independent in many ways and continues making incredible progress. We continue to be very grateful for answered prayer!!
