Keeping an eye on a storm system centered near Las Vegas this - TopicsExpress

Keeping an eye on a storm system centered near Las Vegas this afternoon. While the models are in generally good agreement with this storm systems overall track it will be a tricky forecast due to two major factors...1) the models continue to slow the arrival of the storm system and 2) temperatures will be near critical thresholds from the surface up through about 15,000 ft. A change in as little as 1-3 degrees will result in rain becoming freezing rain, sleet or snow and vice versa. Currently we think the storm will arrive Saturday morning with a wintry mix mainly due to the sub-freezing surface temperatures. However, if the storm slows down further then temperatures could get above freezing and then were looking at mainly rain and possibly sleet. By Saturday night most areas in our region will be below freezing so most if not all of the precipitation will be snow. Due to the above and much more we dont have space to share with you we hope you understand the complexity of throwing out exact snow amounts this far out. If we were to come out with specific numbers in all likelihood they would change, possibly by quite a bit. So for now well broad brush things and say accumulating snows are probable Saturday night. Alot can change over the next 24-36 hours. Stay tuned.
