Keeping beard, its arrangement and its sunan proportion: Shorten the beard less than a FIST length is HARAAM and growing the beard like “Santa Claus” or like non-believers (like Sikh, Hindus-priest etc ) is also not agreeable. =================================== The teachings of Hadhrat Ammar Bin Yaasir, Abdullah Ibn Umar, Sayyidina Umar, Abu Hurairah and Jaabir (R.A.), indicate that ALL used to keep beards that were one fist length or more. Hadhrat Jaabir (R.A.) had said: We used to grow long beards and only during Hajj and Umrah did we trim them to the required length (i.e. fist length). 1) Imam Bukhari (Rahimahullaah) reports on the authority of Imam Nafi [ra] who narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, that Rasulullah said, Oppose the Mushrikeen (polytheists); lengthen the beards and trim the moustaches. Imam Nafi (RA) further states, And ibn Umar, Radi-Allahu anhu, during Hajj or Umrah used to hold on to his beard with his fist and cut off whatever was in excess of that. (Bukhari vol.2 pg.875; Kitab-ul-Libas no.5892) Note: This hadith has also been narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Huraira [Radhiallaahu anhu] and he is also reported to have trimmed his beard beyond one fist. 2) When Abu Qahafa(r) was brought to Muhammad(pbuh) than the hair of his beard was shattered, Messenger of Allah(pbuh) indicate towards the side of his beard and told better if u trim it a little. ( Musnad-e-Imam Azam) 3) Ata Bin Yasaar(r) narrates that a man with shattered hair on his head and beard enters in the Masjid while prophet(pbuh) was there. Muhammad(pbuh) indicates him to go out from Masjid and arrange the hairs of his head and beard first and the man did the same as per instruction and returned. ( Motta-e-Imam Malik) 4) Amr Bin Shoeb ® narrates from his grandfather that Messenger of Allah(pbuh) used to trim his beard from both in its width and length. ( Hadith: Tirmidhi; Chapter: Cutting a little hair from beard) As per Hanafi Fiqh: Imam Muhammed (R.A.) writes in his book Kitabul Aathaar where he relates from Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A.) who relates from Hadhrat Haytham (R.A.) who relates from Ibn Umar (R.A.) that he (Ibn Umar) used to hold his beard in his hand and cut off which was longer. Imam Muhammed (R.A.) says that this is what we follow and this was the decision of Imam Abu Hanifa. Therefore, according to Hanafies, to shorten the beard less than a FIST LENGTH is HARAAM and on this is IJMA (concensus of opinion).
