Keeping it simple - wed all love to provide our ferals with fancy shmanzy high tech shelters - but some of us (read ME) are D.I.Y.-challenged; and/or some dont have access to resources to build fancy shelters - shelters dont have to always be fancy. A styrofoam box, as shown below + a few pieces of wood (as shown in the below photo) to perch the shelter on + a bunch of straw and there you have it - a quick simple shelter that will still provide warmth to some lucky street cat. Styrofoam box - get them for FREE at any pet store that sells fish, or restaurants that serve fish (the fish is transported in the boxes). They just end up dumping these styrofoam boxes in the garbage. Straw - bales can be purchased this time of year at places like Loews, Rona, Home Depot, many garden supply centers etc. OR call a barn/horse stable and see if you can fill a garbage bag full of the loose straw that lands on the barn floor when theyre transporting the bales to the animals. OR find out if your local school, community center, your neighbors, one of the stores in your area is using bales of straw for Halloween displays - theyll just end up dumping the straw after so offer to take it off their hands (or at least get a bag full).
