Keeping up with GlassRoots Staff! GlassRoots Glassblowing Instructor Jennifer Johnson is away searching for ways of enhancing our science curriculum for regular classes and putting it to better use in our Varis Scientific Glassblowing Apprenticeship. Australia and New Zealand have a severe shortage in young trainees to become the next generation of scientific glassblowers. There was a conference at Australia National University for all of the scientific glassblowers in the region. Here is an article in the local newspaper about the conference. canberratimes.au/act-news/scientific-glassblowers-converge-on-canberra-for-conference-20141113-11lp8y.html Jennifer wrote an academic paper that she presented at the conference about GlassRoots and our program in the hopes of building relationships so that potentially there could be internships, further apprenticeships and/or jobs that some of the people going through our program might have opportunities to fill in the future in Australia or in New Zealand. And there is interest! She’ll also be touring other scientific departments at ANU to see how the scientists put the glass products to practical use. For example, yesterday she went to a place called DyeSol. They make solar cells for solar panels and they have chemically reproduced the photosynthesis process to make their solar cells. They have extensive use for scientific glass pieces that need personal modifications done by the ANU glassblowers. She also did some teaching and work at the local equivalent of freelance glassblowing studio here called Canberra Glassworks canberraglassworks, which allows her to explore the glass art side of things as well. Stay tuned for updates on Jen’s trip and lets all continue to grow our glass community! (See the attached photos that Jen sent us so far)
