Keeping your enemies close doesnt eliminate the problem of having enemies in the first place (and if youre sitting there smiling like a clown thinking you dont have enemies because youre such a sweet guy, Ive got news for you — if you dont have enemies, its because no one thinks youre significant enough to worry about). Any man with direction in his life will have enemies, but keeping them close can prevent an unexpected strike. It doesnt take Einstein to figure out that the toughest and most destructive blow comes when its unexpected. The more powerful you become, the bigger the list of nemeses because you become a bigger target or opponent for someone else, whether its the suit in the cubicle next to you or a rival captain in your famiglia or camp/team. Its a Catch-22 of success: The more successful you are, the more people there will be lining up with baseball bats earmarked for your head, and the harder youll fall if you dont keep track of what your enemies are up to. But most enemies (especially the ones that cause the most damage) come from your inner circle, so you can easily keep your eye on these guys. Its important that you dont break the lines of communication with them. Ill meet my enemies, salute them and even buy them drinks because it gives me the chance to look into their eyes and see if they fear me or if they have the slightest smirk of smugness (usually a sign that theyre up to something, or know something they think you dont). Their eyes will also tell you a lot: their hatred, weaknesses, insecurities, and levels of respect. Another way to stay close to your enemies is by having contacts that are close to them. Sort of like a mole that is dumb enough to be manipulated and trusted enough by your enemy to supply you with some good ammunition. It could be simple things like knowing his mistress, his associates, his schedule, etc. When you are dealing with your enemy, valuable info can be easily used against him when the time is ripe. What you will try to do is predict his next move. The more you know about your enemies, the more youll be able to distinguish their strengths (even the level of connections or support they have) and weaknesses. The key to getting close to an enemy when bad blood exists is by offering a truce. You both hate each other, but dont let that affect your judgment. Maintaining respect is the key to solving future problems. Its hypocritical, being social with a guy you want to whack, but La Cosa Nostra is about honor and self-respect. So treat your enemies well, send their kids money on their birthdays, buy them drinks, and even help them out with business deals or promotions. But never let your guard down. This acting bit is like a secret mission and you need to keep as few barriers between you and your sworn enemies as possible. Understand that, and you will be prepared for anything that comes your way. If your enemies do attack, you have to have a plan and counter-attack. Lucky for you, Ive already covered that.
