Keeping your financial information protected from hackers SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)– An increasing number of hackers are breaking into major retailer’s data systems. 22news is working for you with information you need to know to keep your personal information safe First it was Target, then Neiman Marcus, Ebay, and even social media sites were hacked for your personal and financial information. Now the online event ticket retailer Stubhub can be added to the list. In that recent instance, more than a thousand customers’ accounts were compromised. Consumer advocates suggest, to protect yourself, use a credit card more than a debit card, because by law, you are better protected against fraudulent charges made on your credit card than on your debit card. Also, check your bank statements often, at least once a month, if not more frequent. Call your bank as soon as you see a charge you didn’t make. Some consumer advocates suggest getting a credit monitoring program. The government offers three free credit checks a year that will show you if any loans or new credit cards have been taken out in your name. Be choosey about who you bank with. Ask if your bank offers an alert system to let you know if any major changes or charges have been made to your account.
