Keith Beres from The Guitar Guru Network asked my to write about my fave guitar story.. ( I have lots)..but This is my “Mack Daddy” of guitar stories and weirdly, my first as I was, like in the 9th grade. The year was 1967 and the mighty Yardbirds were touring the USA armed with big radio hits, blues roots and JEFF BECK !! I had my Mom drive me to the airport to meet them Beatlemania style in her Red 1965 Mustang convertible. Tons of kids…cops..and real English pedigree rock stars. The Yardbirds were hustled into a 1966 Imperial Crown Coupe and whisked to their hotel. I begged my Mom to follow them so I could get an autograph. KUDI radio was blasting “ Train Kept a Rollin’” and “ Shapes of Things”….the Chrysler Imperial stopped in the entry way of the Holiday Inn…I ran out of my car…stuck my head in their car window and asked “ Where’s Jeff Beck?” He raised his hand, I readied my little Rainbow pad and pencil for an autograph when a LARGE pair of hands pulled me out of the window and deposited me ass first in the bushes by the lobby doors. As I brushed myself off, one of their buddies carrying a blonde tolex Fender case was sort of chuckling at me. I mustered my pride and said “ I only wanted their autograph”..the “buddy” went and got it for me. As he handed it to me, I told him I played guitar and was in a band. The conversation went like this: Him: “What guitar do you have?’ Me: “ An Airline..green with 2 pickups” Him:” Well, you have to get a Fender or a Gibson Les Paul” Me: “ (writing it down like I could EVER afford a Gibson) “ well, I’ll go pick one up tomorrow!” Him: “and get a Vox or a Marshall amp too” Me: “ Okie Dokie ( hey in for a penny… I told him thanks for getting Jeff’s autograph and told him he was cool and he signed the bottom of the paper. I drew a star by it because he was really cool. Years later worshipping “ Wired” and “Blow By Blow” , I reminded my buddies that I, indeed, possessed Jeff’s autograph. …I dug it out, showed them..and…you guessed it The signature by the drawn star read…”JIMMY PAGE”
