Its not your fault you gulped down that Red Bull just before hitting the sack. You are afflicted by 292.89 - Caffeine-Induced Sleep Disorder F15.8. -Think your brother is an asshole when he gets drunk on Thanksgiving and starts one of his political rants? Youve got V61.8 - Sibling Relational Problem F93.3. - Math homework got you down? You might have 315.1 - Mathematics Disorder F81.2. Just be careful not to confuse this with a V62.3- Academic Problem Z55.8. If things are OK in the math department, but you are a teen experiencing uncertainty about life goals and career preferences, then you’re dealing with 313.82 - Identity Problem F93.8. - Sad because someone you cared about has died? See V62.82 - Bereavement. Theyve removed the two-month exclusion, so your mental illness commences at the first expression of grief over a loved ones passing. And so it goes. As there are no biological markers for the vast majority of the conditions listed in the DSM, their inclusion in the manual is *voted* upon by a roomful of psychiatrists, many of whom have ties to pharma. So dont you worry, nutnuts. Whatever youve got, theres a pill for it. Imagine if the rest of medicine worked the same way - if all it took was self- or other- (subjective) reporting of symptoms - in the absence of biological markers - to confirm a diagnosis and to begin drug therapy for cancer or heart disease or diabetes. ;-)
