Kennedy Kane McArthur Festival of Running, Half Marathon and 10K - Saturday 20th July 2013 General Race Instructions to All Competitors Car parking will be available at Fane Valley Complex, Knock Road, Dervock adjacent to the finish area. Overflow parking will be made available at some or all of the following locations: William Pinkerton Memorial Primary School, Knock Road, Dervock (Race Registration). Knockanboy Veterinary Practice, Knock Road Dervock. (Approximately 400m from finish). All car-parks will be clearly sign posted and stewarded. There will be No Parking on the Knock Road, or Carncullagh Road within the 30mph village limits on Race day. Similarly, there will be No Parking on the Bregagh Road between its junctions with the Ballinlea and Ballykenver Roads. Race Packs may be collected from Race Registration which will be in the William Pinkerton Memorial Primary School, 182 Knock Road Dervock BT53 8BB. Race packs may be collected on Friday 19th July between 1600-2000 hours or Saturday 20th July between 0800-1000 hours. The 10k race will start at 10.45am sharp on the Knock Road. All competitors are asked to assemble at McArthur Avenue (approximately 200m) from the William Pinkerton Memorial Primary school gates (Registration) in the direction of Ballymoney. Competitors will be called to the start line at 10.44am for a final race briefing. The Half Marathon will start at 11.00am on the Carncullagh Road, Dervock. All competitors will be asked to warm up in the assembly area on the Stroan Road (approximately 400m from the centre of the village Castlecatt Rd/Knock Rd/Carncullagh Rd junction). Competitors will be called to the start line by race marshals as soon as the last 10K competitor has passed along the Carncullagh Road for a final race briefing. Race numbers must be worn on the front of vests/T-shirts. Please complete your personal details on the back of your race number. You may be disqualified if your race number is not clearly visible. Timing chips must be securely fastened to running shoes as per the instructions issued with the chips. The finish line for all races will be in the William Pinkerton Memorial Primary School accessed from Knock Road. Please prepare appropriately according to the weather forecast. Should the forecast be for warm weather it would be advisable to wear a hat and apply suitable sun protection to exposed skin. Although there will be plenty of water for all competitors along the race route, please ensure that you are well hydrated prior to the start of the race. Any competitors wishing to shower after completing the race may do so free of charge by presenting their race number at reception Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre, 33 Garryduff Road, Ballymoney BT53 7DB. The front of the start is reserved for wheelchair athletes who will start 2 (two) minutes before the main race, and faster runners. Toilets will be available adjacent to registration and the finish area. First aid will be available at each Drinks station. There will be enough drinks at each station for each runner. Used bottles should be dropped at the roadside for collection and disposal. Empty bottles should be placed in the containers provided for disposal. Please do not litter by throwing them into the verge, gardens or adjoining agricultural land. Race marshals will be posted along the course at each road junction in addition to route directional signage. Failure to obey a PSNI Officer or race official/marshal at any point may lead to disqualification At the end of the race you should run through the finish line. Do not turn back or stop until you are well clear of the line or unless you are directed to do so by a race official. Please collect your drinks and race medal before removing your timing chip, depositing it in the container provided. Do not leave the finish zone without surrendering your chip. First Aid will be available at the finish area. Rules Regulations and prize fund are subject to amendment. The Race Director’s decision is final. Competitors who participate in any event do so at their own risk and must rely on their own judgement in dealing with all hazards. 10K Race Route The 10K route will start on the Knock Road and follow an out and back anticlockwise route along the Carncullagh Road, Bellisle Road and join the Kirk Road to the village of Stranocum. On crossing the Bush River, the course turns left and follows the Carncullagh Road back to the village of Dervock, finishing in the William Pinkerton Memorial Primary School off the Knock Road. The course has been officially measured by John Glover of Athletics Northern Ireland. The route is undulating and rural in nature with little traffic. There are 3 climbs on the route, at 1Km, leaving Dervock village, 3Km to the end of Bellisle Road and 7.5 Km at the Carncullagh/Moycraig Road junction. The roads will remain open to traffic throughout the race and normal rules of the road will apply. Traffic will have priority. Runners are asked to use footpaths where available or when directed by a marshal and to keep to the left hand side of the road except when otherwise directed. There are two right hand turns on the course where you are asked to be particularly careful, the Carncullagh Road and Bellisle Road Junction and turning into the school grounds to the finish area. Please check behind for traffic before moving from one side of the road to the other. The course will be marked in Kilometres. One drinks station will be provided, at approximately 5K (Stranocum) where water will be available. Half Marathon The half marathon will start on the Carncullagh Road close to its junction with Stroan Road and within the 30mph limit. The route has been officially measured by John Glover of Athletics Northern Ireland. The course is lightly trafficked, undulating and rural in nature. There are 3 climbs on the route, the first on the Conagher Road at approximately 2.5 miles, the second leaving the village of Stranocum at 6miles and the final climb just at the Carncullagh/Moycraig junction at approximately 11.5miles. The course follows an anticlockwise route leaving the village of Dervock towards Ballymoney along the Knock Road. At the Garry Forest, it turns left along the Conagher Road climbing on to the Kirk Road. From this point it again turns left along the rolling countryside before descending into the village of Stranocum, crossing the River Bush and climbing again to its junction with the Ballykenver Road. This section is generally flat until the left turn at the Bregagh cross roads where a short climb leads to the descent through the famous Dark Hedges, an avenue of 300 year old Beech Trees. A left turn on to the Ballinlea Road leads to the second right turn on the course to the Knockmore Road. The course then turns left on to the Urbal Road for approximately 1 mile to the Moycraig Road and from here descends to its junction with the Carncullagh Road and then returns to the village of Dervock and the finish in the school Grounds off Knock Road. The roads will remain open to traffic throughout the race and normal rules of the road will apply. Traffic will have priority. Runners are asked to use footpaths where available or when directed by a marshal and to keep to the left hand side of the road except when otherwise directed. There are three points where you are asked to be particularly careful as you need to execute right hand turns to follow the race route. 1. The Ballinlea Road and Ballykenver Road Junction following Bush Valley primary School. 2. The Ballinlea Road and Knockmore Road junction approximately ½ mile after passing through the dark hedges ; and 3. The Knock Road in Dervock village leading to the finish in the school grounds. Please check behind for traffic before moving from one side of the road to the other. The course will be marked in miles. Four drinks station will be provided, at approximately 4 miles at Roseyards Church, 6 miles Stranocum (Chestnutt’s Mill), 8 miles Dark Hedges and 11 miles (Urbal Road/Moycraig Road Junction). Water will be available at each drinks station.
