Kenny Rampton 17 hrs · New York, NY · Kenny Wheeler had the most sonorous and resonant tone Ive ever heard on the trumpet. He was also the most humble person Ive ever met. Im beyond grateful to have known him and to have studied with him at Banff during the summer of 1989. He was a HUGE inspiration and one of my biggest influences as a trumpet player, composer and musician. I actually wrote a song for him many years ago called Song for K.W. (I know, really original title!). He was one of the all time greats and the world is a more beautiful place because of him. I remember asking him how he approached composition. He replied by saying he didnt see himself as a composer. He said that he was really just transcribing music that was already in the sky, but hadnt been written down yet. Anybody that listens to his music will understand the meaning of divine inspiration. Truly. Im sad that hes left us, but so happy and grateful for the beauty he brought to my life and to the world. Thank you K.W.
