Kenny Senayah asks: WHAT REALLY IS LOVE? MY RESPONSE: While love seems to be a universally valued attribute, defining it can be daunting, not the least given the complexity of human nature and action. I however believe some principles surpass all cultures and human existence. These are being closely and intimately connected to someone either platonically or romantically such that it brings inner meaning and fulfilment in life as the end objective of love in itself. For example, such is the expression of happiness or surprise on the face of someone you intimately care about when they appreciate something you did for them. Expressing love obviously comes through the series of actions we undertake in a quest to bring us closer to the people we value and care about. Personally, some of the characteristics that fit the description of a LOVING RELATIONSHIP (note it’s a present continuous tense) include: expressions of affection, both physical and emotional; the wish to offer pleasure and satisfaction to my partner and vice-versa; tenderness, compassion, and sensitivity to each other’s needs; the desire for shared activities and pursuits – e.g. love for outdoor sports, reading or travelling; honest communication of personal feelings without any hindrances (you should be able to talk about any and everything including the silly jokes, which I like by the way :) ); and the process of offering concern, comfort, and outward assistance my partner’s aspirations – e.g. support of her career and developmental goals. Hope this suffices! NB: I supplanted my thoughts with other reads to capture the essence as the context is very important.
