Kent astronomer coordinates Ice Worlds exhibit at Royal Society exhibition A major Royal Society public science event will feature an exhibition co-organised by the University of Kent’s Dr Stephen Lowry. The Summer Science Exhibition 2013, which runs from 2 - 7 July in London and is free to the public, features an exhibit dedicated to the solar system’s Ice Worlds. The exhibit will be an integral part of what is described as one of the most exciting cutting-edge UK-science and technology exhibitions this year, which hopes to attract over 10,000 visitors, many from schools, to encourage them to engage with science and technology. Featuring reconstructions of the active south polar region of Enceladus and a 3D movie of the view of Jupiter’s large moon Ganymede, the Ice Worlds exhibit hopes to bring to life the mystery of these worlds in our solar system. Visitors will be able to experience reconstructions of the tortured icy surfaces of the ice worlds, which lie hundreds of millions of miles away from our own planet. Alongside scientists from partners at University College London (UCL), Imperial College London and Queen’s University Belfast, Dr Lowry will be on hand throughout the exhibition to talk to visitors about his research. This focuses on the use of large telescopes to learn about the physical properties of comets and distant trans-Neptunian worlds. Dr Lowry of the University of Kent’s Centre for Astrophysics and Planetary Science, said: ‘The outer solar system is rich with large ice worlds. New discoveries are being made all the time, which show how diverse they really are. For example the huge geysers of Enceladus, the buried ocean of Europa and the huge ‘rugby ball’-shaped world of Haumea. ‘The Ice Worlds exhibit is a great opportunity for the public to discuss the exciting research with UK scientists that work in these areas.’
