Kenya security agents in Mandera town at the weekend recovered stolen vehicles and rescued two drivers after a gunfight with al Shabaab militia across the border. Last Thursday, the criminals carjacked two Land Cruisers headed for Mandera from Maua in Meru ferrying miraa worth thousands of shillings and also took the two drivers hostage. They waylaid the vehicles at Karo village about 20km from Mandera town. They shot at the drivers forcing them to stop before taking control of the vehicles and fleeing toward the border to escape security officers. The officers battled more than 30 militia. Thegun chase took the Kenyan officers more than three kilometres inside Somalia. Mandera police commander Rono Bunei saidthe soldiers pursued the militia across the Kenya- Somali border in Bulla- Hawa. Bunei said the militia repeatedly cross into Kenya and terrorise residents in border towns. Speaking on the phone yesterday, Bunei said the militia take advantage of Kenya’s respect for territory sovereignty. “Whenever the Somali gunmen commit a felony in our county they speed off either onfoot or by a gate-away car since their country border is less than six kilometres. This time we said enough is enough and weare prepared to take the provocative war to their doorstep,” he said. Last Wednesday, armed militia believed to beal Shabaab members robbed commuters travelling from Mandera to Lafey before wounding a senior medical officer and his driver. The soldiers waded into the war-torn country before returning with the vehicles and the drivers.
