Kenya still the best in Africa as Moscow curtains falls Updated on 18/08/13 | By MICHEZOAFRIKA YouTube man Julius Yego may not have won any medal in the Javelin but his new record of 85.40m will linger on in the memories of many Kenyans for years to come. Breaking into the uncharted territory, this was surely determination at its best and great motivation to upcoming athletes. Eunice Sum’s 800m gold will also go down as a major surprise of the 14th edition of the IAAF World Championship in Moscow, Russia as she was the only African finalist and managed to run her personal record to beat Olympic and home favorite Russian Mariya Savinova . Mercy Cherono and Glady Cherono gave Ethiopians Defar and Dibaba a run for their lives in the 5,000m and 10,000m respective to bag silver. Ofcourse many Kenyans would have preferred gold but our girls are slowly closing in! Ezekiel Kemboi’s gold extends Kenya’s dominance in the 3,000m Steeplechase. New kid on the block Conseslus Kipruto bagged silver and looks like the ripe candidate to take over the mantle. The girls did us proud in the women’s version. Milcah Chemos and Lidya Chepkurui gold and silver respectively was pure brilliance. Mo Farah again proved to be in a class of his own but the gap is slowly narrowing. Paul Kipngetich Tanui gave a good fight and deserved a silver but a photo finish went to the advantage of Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet. The Somali born British runner still remains “East Africa’s homework”. Special mention goes to Edna Ngeringwony Kiplagat who started the gold rush in the women’s marathon. Though our men failed to emulate the beautiful sisters, Ugandan Kiprotich deserves a kudos for ensuring the gold remains in the neighborhood. Of course we missed 800m record holder David Rudisha who should be strategizing on how to neutralize upcoming youngster Aman of Ethiopia. Overall, Kenya had a great outing .We managed to retain our title as Africa’s best . In the whole world, we ranked fourth behind the land of great sprinters, Jamaica. Hosts Russia finished first while USA took second spot. This was a major improvement compared to last year’s disastrous Olympic outing where Kenya earned only two gold medals through David Rudisha and Ezekiel kemboi. It may be a coincident that all the Gold medalists are police officers. As one of our fans Philip Mwas Mwangi puts it “Uhuru, Kimaiyo and Kaindi these Officers deserve medal awards and promotions.” Well done Kenyan ambassadors!
