Kenyans should watch out that they do not close up the space that we created to ourselves when we envisaged referendum in the constitution. Conversations on whether we should have a referendum or not was not envisaged in the design and architecture of the constitution. What was envisaged was any Kenyan having the right at any time to bring issues that need to be addressed as spelt out in the constitutional frame. However, once an indication is given by a Kenyan to have issues looked at, the strategic engagement would be to have consultations and negotiated positions to ensure that these referendum issues coming out do not surprise the anyone. The current grandstanding going on in the country on whether we should have a referendum or even before referendum issues have been framed is not healthy and only exposes our underbelly as a people. Granted that the outcome of this referendum is likely to serve as political watershed for some and a political Waterloo for others. We must however, socialize the political class from thinking that constitution review is about them. We must warn them against designing referendum questions to rule each other out on the basis of age or court proceedings as the political class seems to posturing. If it becomes apparent to Kenyans that issues being brought on the table are this parochial, we must stem the tide right at the County Assembly level. If the issues are seen to determine our destiny as a people, then , we are ready to make our opinion. I urge Kenyans to hold our fire until these issues come out. Meanwhile, lets keep working, lets keep loving.
