Kenya’s Angela Nyangweso on Tuesday braved a second set onslaught to stun top seed Kasahun Kassim from Ethiopia in split sets and retain Girls’ Under-12 title at the ITF East African Junior Tennis Championships in Dar es Salaam. Second seeded Nyangweso battled hard to take the first set 7-5 before Kassim put up a spirited fight to win the second set 6-3. However, Nyangweso, who is based at the ITF High Performance Training Centre in Burundi, regain her composure to ease home to an easy 6-2 win in the last set. Nyangweso had in the semi-finals tossed out Hoziane Katambala from Burundi 6-4, 6-1 after having also crushed Djasumini Uwamwesi from Rwanda 6-0, 6-0 in the quarters. RETAINED THE DOUBLES TITLE Kassim eliminated Nyangweso’s twin sister Rosemary Asumwa in the semis after easing to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Nyangweso and Asumwa would combine well to also retain Girls’ Under-12 title, beating Maria Elisha Milanzi / Easther Paulo Nankulange from Tanzania 6-1, 6-4. Faith Nyabera and Esther Wahome lost their semi-final ties in girls’ Under-16 and Under-14 respectively. Nyabera lost to second seeded Kemmy Kaodoah from Tanzania 1-6, 2-6 after having beaten Mwamini Bitungwa from Burundi 6-1, 7-5 in the semi-finals. Kaidoah went on to win the Under-16 contest, stunning top seeded M. Mujawimana from Burundi 7-5, 6-4 in the final. After dismissing Emiliana Stanslaus from Tanzania 6-1,6-0, Wahome, who was seeded fourth, lost to second seeded Saha Nahimana from Burundi 0-6, 1-6 in the semis. Faraji had upset second seeded Aisha Niyonkuru from Burundi 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 in the other semi. SHAH FALLS Kenya’s Kael Shah reached Boys’ Under-12 final before losing to Tanzanian Deogratis Ernest 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Shah had stunned first seeded Salum Mutahazi (Burundi) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the quarters before edging out Yusuf Lawrence Godwin (Tanzania) 6-1, 6-1 in the semis. Kenya’s Kean Shah, who won last year’s Boys’ Uner-12 title and Ryan Randiek failed to go past the first round of Boys Under 14 category. Shah lost to Hassan Hamisi 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 while Randiek lost Damien Laporte (Seychelles) 2-6, 4-6. Geoffrey Ogega and Albert Njogu from Kenya also exited in the first round of Boys’ Under-16 competition. Ogega crushed out to Ali Hamza (3-6, 6-4, 1-6 Tanzania), while Njogu lost 1-6, 0-6 to Rajabu Ntamba (Burundi).
