Keri nyo ba to???? These are clean rats, sabi nila, kasi field or bamboo rats ito. Masarap llalo na kung adobo. There are a number of exotic foods from the Philippines, and bizarre though it may seem to many, theres a long list of bizarre foods which are eaten in the Philippines, and surely, from other parts of the world, too. Anyway, lets just take a look at this Freaky Feasts #13, Adobong daga; otherwise known as field rats cooked adobo style by Coconuts Manila, as shared by CMs Lester Babiera. On their episode of Freaky Feasts #13, Coconuts Tv went to the Northern part of the Philippines to try adobong bau ti taltalon (how its called in Ilocos Norte)or in simpler words - “rat adobo”. As narrated by Babiera, they went to a dense forest in Ilocos, hunted for field rats with a dog, and cooked those for dinner, adobo style. The team went to Baksil North to pick up local hunters Maning and Harry and a dog named Labang as guides, and to help them look for “mountain rats.” Babiera shared that rats are usually disgusting because it is commonly found inside sewers or garbage cans. But according to the locals, what we are about to eat is clean because they live in bamboo trees and eat only bamboo sprouts. These rodents serve as one of the common dishes in Baksil North. The locals said that they usually eat it with rice or they munch it while drinking beer with friends. It is part of their culture. The Coconuts TV team were able to capture three fat rats which made them feel uneasy. However, the rats, according to Babiera, looked different from the ones that I see on the streets. Their hair was thicker and they dont smell bad. Babiera said it was uncomfortable watching the hunters cut up and clean the rat meat, but when other ingredients were added and the meat started looking like chicken adobo, the challenge became easier.
