Keris blog about her time in Columbia! Read more at: amigos-americas.tumblr/tagged/Barranquilla-Colombia Volunteer blogger of the week (Keri Belcher): Greetings from Colombia! I can’t believe I’ve already been here in Barranquilla for a week! A lot of fun things have happened, but I have a feeling the best is yet to come. In the mornings we’ve been taking a university class called “social immersion,” and then in the afternoons we’ve been doing training activities in preparation for going to our smaller community outside of Barranquilla. My favorite part so far has been meeting everyone, like all the other AMIGOS Volunteers from the US and the Colombian Volunteers from UniNorte, but especially my Barranquillan host family. I met them last Sunday, which happened to be Father’s Day, so we had a BBQ outside to celebrate. While the food was cooking, Elisabeth (the other AMIGOS Volunteer who I’m sharing my host family with) brought out the hula hoops she made to show the family and pass time before dinner. As we were playing with the hula hoops, the other kids in the neighborhood came over wanting to join us. Elisabeth brought 11 hula hoops, but that wasn’t enough for how many kids were wanting to play. It was fun but quite challenging to explain how to play the different hula hoops games in Spanish. I think it was great practice for when I’ll be working with kids in the smaller community. Tuesday is when I’ll go to Cuatro Bocas (my community) with my group. I’m really excited to finally see where I’ll be staying for the majority of the program. I can’t wait! ¡Chao! Keri
