Kevin Brown is one of my favourite modern blues artists, one that sadly does not have the recognition he deserves. Blues as an artform may not be dead, but modern blues is stale, for the most part: too often, its a contest in instrumental prowess, very far from the roots that saw its initial success. Kevin is not a guitar hero. Dont get me wrong, hes a fantastic guitar player, but hes not into histrionics. His technique is 110% devoted to the song, its a discreet underpinning that magnifies the music. More importantly, Kevin is a true songwriter with roots in both blues and folk music. Each one of his songs is unique, each one pulls you in and tells you a story. And Kevin is a hell of a songwriter. Kevin is pulling together some money to finance his next album, the first in quite a while. Hes been through heart surgery earlier this year, but hes better now, and back on the road. Still, finding the money to do a proper recording of his music isnt easy. Hes done car boot sales, various events and concerts to bring in some cash, but theres one way that we all can contribute to the next album and that is by buying his albums. Theres a page here on the new album project, aptly entitled Kevin Browns New Album Project. Unfortunately, its not clear to me still how you preorder the next album. One thing Kevin isnt good at is marketing... In the meantime, you can at least order the existing albums. I recommend Mojave Dust, Tin Church and the instrumental (but magical) Abundance. Kevin has some deals on his webpage (thekevinbrown), and you can also get digital versions on bandcamp: kevinbrown1.bandcamp Listen to Mojave Dust, and if you like it as much as I do, you know what to do.
