Kevin McKay: If art is a contest (as suggested by the picture), it would appear the strongest aggressor wins. Thank you for this. That is an absolutely brilliant, brilliant point youre alluding to here. In classical (Ancient Greek) debate, and in contemporary intellectual approaches, it is the force of the stronger argument (to use Habermas-ian terms), that determines what is right. This only shows however, that one is better at arguing, than their opponent. The intention here is to spark curiosity, through debate, in order to explore and clarify and enquire into what the question might answer or lead us to. We want to have as our aim, to determine the accurate evaluation (or truth) of the matter. As everyone has a unique perspective to offer, this can enable a positive dialectic trajectory towards this goal. Soooo.... STATE YOUR POSITION! -an artists debate hosted and held by Los Disparates Theme Question: How do we determine what is good and bad art? We no longer clearly state what is a good art work in our times. This affects artists on many levels including their aesthetic philosophical approach, social/political relationships and economic circumstances. An artists reputation is an unspoken area for one who practices art making in the social arena. We wish to explore in this discussion; what makes an artwork to be of significant value to society? Is it largely determined by time (when the individual artist ceases to exist physically, the level of cultural understanding about art and what is popular? Is it up to the art intelligentsia (if this even exists) to communicate what is good art? Or does it rely on other factors like luck, chance or synchronicity? Furthermore, is it possible to work together, or in small groups to change our circumstances, or are we better off in playing the art game set up by the Andy Warhol society? If you know, then STATE YOUR POSITION! in the colosseum of art with fellow artists of Los Disparates. Welcome one and all. Date and Venue: TBA artofmanliness/2010/11/30/history-of-rhetoric/
