Kew Antigua - 2 (8, 78) Westminster Wanderers FC - 1 (McGrory 72) (McGrory missed pen 64) The Wanderers opened their 2013/14 league account with an unfortunate 2-1 defeat away to old rivals Kew Antigua. Kew Antigua took a lead inside the first 10 minutes when a red and white shirt rose highest from an in swinging corner to guide a brilliant header into the top corner. Kew almost doubled their lead soon after when an attempted cross was hit a little too cleanly and Tom Overbury had to be alert to tip over the bar. James Kerry, in an unfavoured left back position linked up well with Taddeo Vender to be in on goal, but his shot was saved well by the legs of the keeper. It was a half of few chances, with the Wanderers playing the better football throughout the first 45. Early in the second period, both teams started brightly as the game began to open up a bit more. Chances started to come at both ends, but while Kew were limited to long shots that were easily dealt with by Overbury, the Wanderers were creating some golden opportunities to equalise. The ball sat up nicely for Jimmy McGrory who smashed a volley goalwards from 12 yards, but sadly it was straight at the keeper. Just after the hour mark, the pressure paid off as the busy debutant Andy Smith was brought down inside the box for a blatant penalty. Jimmy McGrory stepped up and disappointingly scuffed the spot kick too close to the keeper, who fumbled into the path of Taddeo Vender, but was up quickly to make the double save. John Austin then had an effort cleared off the line and while the rebound fell nicely for Andy Smith, the defence were there again quickly to block. Soon after, as the game approached the final 20 minutes, the Wanderers were finally level when another debutant, Darran Eggleton, played a perfectly weighted ball over the top for McGrory, who finished well from 18 yards past the onrushing keeper. With the Wanderers now in the ascendency and with all the momentum, they were pressing for a winner. James Kerry did well on the left wing to cut inside and with nobody in the box, he fizzed a shot off the top of the crossbar from a tight angle 15 yards out. The Wanderers were then caught out on the break as they were throwing everything forward. An excellent pass from the Kew midfielder dissected Ben Kelly and Rob Day to put the striker in on goal, who made it 2-1 to the home side with a neat finish and just 10 minutes remaining. One final chance came to the Wanderers with an overhead kick from captain John Foster looping onto the bar. The rebound fell invitingly for Ben Kelly who unfortunately blasted over the bar before the final whistle sounded.
