Key points you need to understand if you are going to SAVE the MS Society in NSW: 1. The MS specialised community-based services that are currently being delivered in a WHOLE PERSON APPROACH to families with MS by MS experts at the MS Society are going to be lost entirely IF YOU DON’T ACT NOW! 2. The current financial crisis facing the MS Society is only partly due to hard financial times, GFC, or competition for the charity dollar. Financial management of the funds is now under scrutiny and people are asking what on earth has been going on! 3. The NDIS (Disability Care Australia, DCA) will not begin in NSW & ACT in earnest for a few years. By then we must have a strong, MS-specific service centre operating in state or territory - so that there will be a strong “MS Early Intervention & Outreach Co-ordination Centre” available for providing services to people with MS who want to buy these core services with their NDIS money 4. What we are asking for with our SAVE THE MS SOCIETY ACTION, is as simple as ABC: A. Proper, transparent governance and oversight by a well-balanced and well-functioning Board that represents the needs and wants of families with MS B. Genuine consultation and collaboration by the Executive Team with people with MS & their families and MS staff in each location including NSW C. Firm agreement from the Board and Executive Management Team that the MS Society specialist staff will deliver essential MS-specific therapies and information & education services for families with MS taking a WHOLE PERSON APPROACH, AND the MS Society will fund these services itself from donation money if funds cannot be found elsewhere before (and after) the NDIS begins in earnest We believe that it is the families with MS who should be directly involved in deciding what the MS Society’s essential services should be. The MS Society can’t hope to provide everything to everyone with MS, but they should provide at least the essential services that only the MS experts can provide, and the MS Society itself should deliver these services taking a whole person approach.
