Kia ora tātou. 3rd of Paenga-whāwhā, 2014. Level: All levels Here are a few Māori terms used to recite a whakapapa (genealogy): Whāea/ Māmā/ Kōkā (Eastern dialect) – Mother Matua/Pāpā – Father Tuahine – Sister (of a male) [Singular] Tungāne – Brother (of a female) [Singular and plural] Tuakana – Older sibling (of the same gender) [Singular] Teina/ taina (Te Arawa dialect) – Younger sibling (of the same gender) [Singular] Example: Ko __________________ taku (my) whāea. Ko __________________ taku pāpā. Ko __________________ taku tuahine. Ko __________________ taku tungāne. Ko __________________ taku tuakana. Ko __________________ taku teina. Your mission, should you wish to accept: 1) Print out this lesson and fill the gaps with the applicable names from your family tree. Next week you will be given the appropriate terms for referring to other individuals that fit the same category, as well as terms for other family members. However, until then continue to practise these terms, as whakapapa in Māoridom is essential for identity, for connectivity, and our own unique way of linking the past to the present.
