Kiala slams rampant graft in Machakos BY ANDREW MBUVA Nepotism and corruption in the county is rampant, Machakos deputy governor Bernard Kiala has said. He said county jobs are being shared among certain families regardless of their qualifications. Kiala said some senior officers in the county government have secured jobs for their wives, children, parents and relatives. The deputy governor was speaking at Bomani AIC Church on Sunday. Kiala said the officers are using jobs as a campaign tool in preparation for the 2017 election. Kiala said most tenders in Machakos are being awarded to contractors from outside the county at the expense of local businesspeople. He said that out of the county’s Sh8 billion budget in the 2013-14 financial year, Sh6 billion benefited contractors from outside. Kiala said the main agenda for devolution was to ensure that residents of each county manage their own resources “but this is not the case in Machakos”. He accused the county leadership of frustrating MCAs and other officials who question such issues. The deputy governor said his security was withdrawn so that he stops questioning the things he finds irregular. Kiala accused the county chief of staff Mwengi Mutuse of using some MCAs to try to intimidate him in public during the commissioning of the Mwala-Kithimani road. When the Machakos county government commissioned the Mwala–Kithimani road in Makutano, the county assembly majority leader Joshua Mwonga accused Kiala of financing MCAs who caused chaos in the assembly last week. Kiala yesterday said he will not relent in fighting for the interest of the residents. He was accompanied by Machakos Central MCA Cornelius Kitheka and his Ndalani counterpart Stephen Muthuka.
