Kids - Pushing Max Weights too Early As someone whos been weight training for close to a decade, there is nothing I love more than pushing heavy weights or coaching clients to smash personal bests! But when I see a young, underdeveloped kids constantly trying to push super max loads in the weight room, it makes me cringe. First of all the majority of these kids cant even master their bodyweight never mind working with any significant load I always refer to Vladimir Zatsiorsky (a Russian coach and author of Science and Practice of Strength Training) three year rule with younger athletes. He states Young athletes shouldnt look to push maximal weights for at least 3 years! Instead, their primary focus should be on body weight drills, learning proper technique, and building their training volume slowly but surely. Take Home If your a young athlete, or train young athletes. Dont go hell for leather nor get to fancy with your approach. Instead, focus on being smart and consistent.
