Kilimanjaro land management on right track March 23 2014 Kilimanjaro Region is on the right track in implementation of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) projects in which 74 per cent of identified activities have been accomplished. Acting National Project Coordinator, Mr Damas Masologo said that the project is engaging stakeholders in mitigating climate change effects in five projects. Mr Masologo said SLM, which is funded jointly by the government and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), tackles a rapidly increasing population, excessive harvesting of natural resources and resulting land degradation. Mr Masologo was optimistic that the aim of the project will be achieved, declining economies will be overturned as people are being trained on several money making projects such as bee keeping, make and use of alternative energy stoves instead of using wood and wood products. Among others, SLM facilitates in rehabilitation of traditional irrigation schemes, rain water harvesting technology, tree planting initiatives and how to improve water use practices. Speaking at the workshop, Same District Commissioner (DC), Mr Herman Kapufi, asked for introduction of by-laws that state clearly what areas have to be preserved so that district will be able to enforce them. In her keynote address, a Human Geographer from University of Dar es Salaam, Dr Christine Noe said Kilimanjaro is among areas that have been heavily degraded, but there is high potential for improving land quality. She said there is a direct link between environmental degradation and poverty because soil management leads to sustainable agriculture, sustainable land management and in due course sustainable development. Earlier on, Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Leonidas Gama, said one of the problems with the region is its smallness in size but highly populated, to the tune of 124 people per square kilometre. Kilimanjaro is the smallest region in the country save for Dar es Salaam. By DEUS NGOWI, Tanzania Daily news
