Killimor 1-16 Kilbeacanty 1-10. Kilbeacanty 1-10 Kilconieron 1-9 So after a morning of waiting by the phones for confirmation of the venue Kilbeacanty finally got to play the county Junior B shield final at 4.30 in Ardrahan under lights against Kilconieron . The game wasn’t spectacular by any means but the most important thing was Kilbeacanty were ahead on the score board when ref Ronan Stankard blew the final whistle around 10 past 6. The evening was sharp but not bad for hurling and as dusk was setting in it was Kilbeacanty who started well with Justain Kelly opening the scoring with a fine point from play from the right wing after 2 minutes. Adrian Hughes doubled the score with his first point of the contest from a free before Kilconieron opened their account with a point from a free . Kilbeacanty were dominant in the opening quarter but this was not reflecting on the score board as they missed a number of scorable chances . Ciaran Lambert then had a goal chance but his deft flick over the goalie ended up going over rather than under the crossbar to leave Kilbeacanty 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after 15 minutes. Oisin O Donnell who had a fine game at midfield scored a great point from the middle of the field before disaster struck at the back, Thomas Broderick in goals took down a ball that was going over the bar but Kiconieron’s corner forward got a flick to it before Thomas had control of it and the ball fell over the Kilbeacanty goal line to tie up the scores at 1-1 to 0-4 with Kilbeacanty haven done all the hurling . What happened next was the defining move in the game, Thomas picked out Frank Gillane with a short puck out (a pre planned move) Frank launched a long ball to the full forward line, Big Seamus Fahey got possession before giving a superb pass off to the inrushing Adrian Hughes who without taking it into his hand expertly dispatched the ball to the top right hand corner of the net for what was a great team goal and it restored Kilbeacanty’s 3 point advantage. Kilconieron replied with another point from a free before Kenny Corless pointed after been set up by Brendan Burke, Burke himself then scored a fine point from play before Kilconieron responded with another free to leave it 1-6 to 1-3 with 6 minutes to go in the first half. Ciaran Lambert then had another goal chance but the Kilcoineron goalie was off his line quickly to save at the expense of a 65 which Adrian Hughes converted before Kilconieron also had half a goal chance which was blocked by Conor Divney using his rear end at the expense of a 65 for Kilconieron which was also converted to close the scoring in the first period to leave the score 1-7 to 1-4 at half time. Darkness had now set in when the second half started and it was to be a half of little scores with the battles for possession being the highlight of the second period as both teams went in search of victory .Both sides were guilty of some bad misses but Kilconieron were now on top and started to claw back the 3 point lead The first score of the second half however did not come until 14 minutes in when Kilconieron pointed a free and followed this up with another free shortly after to leave only 1point between the sides. It was backs to the wall for the Kilbeacanty backs and time and time again the repelled the Kiconieron attacks with Ronan Reilly and Frank Gillane most prominent. Thomas Broderick then made a great save from a snap shot and Ger Lally was on hand and used his elbow to stop the rebound on the line and prevent a certain goal. Kilconieron pointed another free to level the score before Cieran Lambert who was now at wing forward was fouled and Adrian Hughes converted for Kilbeacantys first score of the second half with 20 minutes gone to restore Kilbeacantys 1 point lead and put a halt to the Kilconieron onslaught .Kilconieron then had their first score from play to level it again and like buses there second point from play came along to put them ahead for the first time in the contest with 4 minutes remaining and things did not look good for Kilbeacanty. The lads knuckled down however and upped their game and Shane Moylette now at corner forward due to cramp won possession and was fouled in front of the goals and Adrian Hughes converted the free to level the game with time up. With a draw looking most likely a moment of inspiration was needed and it came from Frank Gillane who gathered possession around the middle of the field bust forward to take on the Kilconieron defence and was fouled in front of the goals Adrian Hughes converted and when Kilbeacanty secured possession from the puck out Roan Stankard blew up to give Kilbeacanty Victory. It was a good team performance and the backs in particularly were most impressive. Thomas in the goals apart from the goal was assured all through and his smart puck outs launched many of Kilbeacanty’s attacks he also made a great save at a crucial time in the second half Ronan Reilly and Frank Gillane were the pick of a solid defence. Oisin O Donnell and Shane Moylette dominated midfield particularly in the first half and it was no coincidence that Kilconieron’s dominant period was when Moylette suffered from cramp. In the forwards on a day when each score was vital they all chipped in. Captain Adrian Hughes led by example and finished his goal expertly and Ciaran Lambert who was unlucky with two goal chances looked dangerous all through. So well done Gerry, Jack and all the lads Job done onwards and upwards . The team was Thomas Broderick Gerry Lally, Declan Donohue, Conor Divney, John the Boot Curley Reilly , Frank Gillane, Shane Moylette and Oisin O Donnell (0-1), Brendan Burke(0-1), Adrian Hughes(1-5, 0-4 frees 0-1 65) Justin Kelly(0-1) , Kenny Corless(0-1), Seamus Fahey, Ciaran Lambert (0-1) Subs Jason Kelly , for Kenny Corless , James Nelly for John the Boot and David Mulkerins for Shane Moylette also togged William Fahey and Johnnie McKiernan missing Aaron Gilchrist.
