(Kimberlee) Bob and I talked today. He spent time with Mom - TopicsExpress

(Kimberlee) Bob and I talked today. He spent time with Mom yesterday and watched her in therapy. He said her new task was to kick a ball with her left foot and then again with her right foot. Good news is that she was able to kick the ball as directed. Shes making progress. Dad called a few minutes ago and said Mom had therapy twice today. Her weekend therapist reminds her of her oldest grandchild Joshua. Hes blond, tall and wears glasses just like our Josh. Yesterday Aunt Patty, Uncle Jerry, cousin Amy and her husband Juergen arranged to get a hospital bed from a neighbor who no longer needed it. So we moved a few things and got it set up. Right now we have it in the front living room. I was told today that she wants it in front of the living room window so she can see out and be close to the activity in the house. So we will get that done...thats an easy fix. We also cleaned out the fridge. Many of the leftovers were growing penicillin because they have been in there for 3 weeks....so we tossed a lot. We can restock before they come back home. Speaking of coming home....the 26th is still the anticipated date. Bob explained to Mom that she has several therapy goals that she is to meet before her doctor will recommend her release. I dont remember the exact percentages but its like. ...patient must transfer from bed to wheelchair with less than 25% assist. She is at the opposite end of that using 75% assist. She is making vast improvements; I just dont know whether she will meet her goals by the 26th. I know she is trying her hardest to get out! I understand wanting to be home in your own house with its own smells. I just dont want her to rush to get home and then miss opportunities for intensive rehab. Everything we hear advocates intense therapy especially in the early months. I hope that she will adhere to her treatment plan regardless of her release date. This week is supposed to be training for the immediate family so that we know the proper techniques to help move Mom. Everything right now focuses on scooching (sp?) her rear. Scooch from bed to wheelchair. Scooch from wheelchair to chair or bed or potty. During her scooching, she has techniques that she is supposed to utilize like leaning forward and then rocking side to side to lift the butt cheeks so that the scooching can occur. The assistant has to be in front of her blocking her knees so she doesnt slide out when transferring. My Dad has been watching and learning for the last 2 weeks. Now he will have to work on gaining her trust. It has been a challenge for her to trust her therapists and their capabilities to hold, lift and transfer...again...shes getting better with it. Dad said priest came over and met with her. They said some prayers and she got Communion. Thank you so much for the cards for her and Dad. She is reading them and Dad keeps putting things up on her bulletin board. She knows she has a lot of people praying for her. Our next big update should be Wednesday. Each Wednesday her case is reviewed and we get a better idea of her progress and her treatment plan. So more then....
