Kinahan challenges NI Conservatives to condemn Secretary of State Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kinahan has challenged the NI Conservatives to condemn the Secretary of State for agreeing to meet with Unionist Leaders in a bid to resolve the impasse which has arisen regarding parading in North Belfast. Mr Kinahan said: “Yesterday Mark Brotherston of the Northern Ireland Conservatives attacked the Ulster Unionist Party and the DUP for being “un-British” in creating a body incorporating a wide spectrum of unionism to give leadership and help try to ensure a lawful, peaceful and respectful response. “Perhaps Mr Brotherston is unaware that the initiative was welcomed not only by the Secretary of State but also by the Chief Constable. I find it extraordinary that the NI Conservatives should condemn us for sitting down with the PUP Leader on the same day as the Conservative Secretary of State says she will meet him as soon as possible. Does Mark Brotherston equally condemn both the Ulster Unionists and Theresa Villiers who said “I am happy to meet unionist leaders to discuss their proposal as soon as possible.” “It should be noted that seven weeks ago in the European Election, Mark Brotherston received what could charitably be described as a less than ringing endorsement in the shape of 4,144 votes from across the entire Province, yet now he feels capable of defining Britishness for the rest of this society. “Perhaps the next time Mr Brotherston feels the need to share his views with the rest of us, he should check and see what his more senior and elected colleagues are saying. “The NI Conservatives must urgently whether or not they support the stance of the Secretary of State and the Chief Constable.”
