Kindergarten Classes Should Focus on More Advanced Content, Less on Basics A study published in the American Educational Research Journal looked at the effects of focusing on more advanced reading and mathematics content in kindergarten and found that student performance improves when teachers focus on the more difficult material. Researchers from the University of Chicago and Vanderbilt University defined basic content as topics like counting out loud, identifying shapes, naming and identifying letters and practicing handwriting skills, while advanced content included simple addition, working with two-digit numbers, using context clues for reading comprehension and common prepositions.
