Kindly find below my speech delivered during the launch of the Machakos Peoples Park MACHAKOS PEOPLE’S PARK TO MAKE MACHAKOS THE TOURIST HUB OF KENYA BY H.E. GOVERNOR ALFRED N. MUTUA The Emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates has high temperatures that get to nearly scorching 50 degrees centigrade for most of the year. Despite its weather, last year, Dubai recorded visitation of about 100 million tourists earning the region over 4.5 billion US$ (Kshs. 396 billion). In Kenya, last year, we recorded 1.8 million visitors only. This is despite our varied beautiful land and amazing animals that are second to none. We plan to make Machakos County the tourism hub of Kenya so as to generate wealth to enable us to transform the lives of our people. Today we launch Machakos People’s Park as part of a tourism Program to attract local and foreign tourists to Machakos. The 40 acre Machakos People’s Park will be recognized as the most beautiful park in Africa in addition to being the largest Park in the region, It has the only field amphitheatre in the whole of the African continent. The park features water fountains: children’s play area, miniature golf, restaurants, solar exhibition stand, conference facilities and even a sailing boat. The park aims to provide comfort and enjoyment to all Kenyans and visitors. The Park has been built to international standards and is part of a program to build recreation parks and facilities in all the towns in Machakos County so that our people can enjoy civic services. Our expectation is to be able to generate 100 million shillings as revenue per year from conferencing and visitations to the park. This money will be used in the development of key areas of the county such as in provision of clean water and in enhancing food availability. Ladies and Gentlemen, The Park will be officially open to the public on Valentines weekend, from Friday February 14th for a three (3) day entertainment extravaganza. Saturday, 15th and Sunday 16th will be family days and we welcome all to come and visit the park and enjoy free entertainment from great musicians and comedians. We have chosen to open the Park over the Valentine’s weekend because we want to uphold Machakos as the city and county of friendship, harmony and yes, LOVE. I am proud to announce that this park has been developed using local labour and engineering by the Machakos Ministry of Public Works. It is a fully Machakos and Kenyan creation and development. Many Youth and women have worked in its creation and earned their daily bread, as a result of the works. I congratulate our Ministers, Chief Officers, Engineers and many members of staff who have participated in this venture. Good job. Ladies and Gentlemen, As I conclude, I wish to say a few words about the political situation in our county and our country Kenya. In Kenya today, there are two kinds of leaders: there are those of us who are vibrant, selfless and who are focused towards initiating speedy, timely and real development for our people in a transparent and efficient way. Then there are those of a different era who have run out of ideas, are greedy, intolerant, afraid of positive change and whose main agenda is to ensure that the poor remain poor so that they can continue to be masters as they enhance corruption, despondency and the devils agenda. Kenyans, I believe, are tired of being milked dry, of suffering and empty talk. Kenyans want to see their lives change in this digital era so that they too can live in comfort as the Children of God. I call upon Wananchi to judge their leaders based on the development they bring and not on how much they talk, because talk is cheap. We are so poor that we do not have time to engage in empty rhetoric. All my energies are galvanized towards fighting poverty and initiating badly needed development projects free from myopic and narrow minded agendas. Let us all hold hands together and move in the same direction to achieve a great County and an amazing country of Kenya. Thank you and karibu sana Machakos, the Place to be. God bless you all.
