King Felipe VI Christmas Speech 2014 King Felipe VI enbarks on his first Christmas message to the Spanish people. In his first Christmas speech, the King speaks of the hard times many families in Spain face due to the economic decline in the country; he also speaks of a hopefully 2014 from an economic standpoint. “The problems I have mentioned have led to a serious social concern. However, we must not succumb to pessimism, social unrest, or discouragement; but firmly and effectively address the causes of these problems, solve them and regain calmness and serenity that requires and deserves a democratic society like ours.” He also speaks of corruption (though he makes no mention of his sister, Cristina) and the importance of the rule of law. King Felipe VI also addresses the issue of Catalonia, urging for unity. “Disagreements are not resolved with emotional or romantic breaks.” The King ended his speech with hope for the new year, and the values of a democratic Spain.
