Kinglet collage, or is it Kinglet College? I have put these two shots of different kinglets together for comparisons. The top is a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. The bottom is a Gold-crowned kinglet. These were both photoed in Phippsburg in the fall. The Ruby is a slightly larger bird at 4.25 while the GC is 4. Rubies have slightly more elongated bodies, as is seen here. They also have a plainer face, but a distinct, though pale eye ring. The Gold-crowned has a boldly striped face and crown. GCs are year round residents in Maine, while the little Ruby migrates. Both birds flit around at the ends of branches gleaning insects. Both of these birds are numerous in Maine right now. These are our smallest birds next to hummingbirds. And there you have it!
