Kings for a Day, August 2nd!! Details of the day: We have had quite a few ask about some details. Hope this answers most questions. Please please get signed up ASAP.We really need to know how many are coming and feel like we need to limit #s (35 max) due to the no fee camping/hiking area. We dont want 100 people overwhelming the area. Most summit mountains in other states require advanced permit purchasing and even wait lists. We dont want to have that occur up there. Theres lots more good info on kings peak online. Just search hiking kings peak or running kings peak. We decided to charge $20. We will net about $18 after fees. We will put the rest into an awesome dinner and a killer running style t shirt. Dinner will be the night before consisting of BBQ steaks and chicken, sweet potatoes and some type if salads. We will serve dinner around 6-7pm on Friday night. Camping is tent style. We will want to caravan as many as possible so we dont bring in too many cars to the camp site. More details later on departure time and meeting places. Weather can be stormy and can change very quickly. The nights get chilly 50s but not freezing. This is in the high Unintas and its way in the back country. You cant run to walmart if you forget something so bring it if you think you might need it. For the hike/run - we will start early, goal to be running by 4:30am with headlamps. Sun will come up quick and the first bit if the trail is pretty mellow technically. Headlamps and early start will help those hiking to be able to be back in the light. Runners should finish in 6-8 hours. Run/walking should take 8-10, and hikers will take 11-14 hours. So long as you keep moving, even hiking should still return to base camp in the light. Total distance is between 23-26 miles round trip. Dont assume you can just walk and tough it through this. Its an awesome vertical climb to summit. The altitude is also a factor for sure. On the other hand, Boy Scouts do it. So dont be ultra intimidated. Just be prepare. Water/fuel/food - There are a couple streams, springs, and rivers in the first 7-10 miles or so of the hike. Its been said that a few are clean enough (naturally filtered) to drink. But, we recommend filters, pills, wands, some type of purification (to be safe) because youll definitely need to refill water. Youll have to pack fuel, salt, and a grip of water but plan to refill water once or twice from the sources the mountain provides. Dress/attire - again, its definitely hit or miss with thunderstorms. There are some forecasts that give good detail for the area, but the only reliable will be 1-2 days before due to high mountain area. We plan to ascend RAIN OR SHINE! The only dangers concerned about is lighting if there are thunder storms. We just seek shelter or cover should a storm come in. They usually blow through fast. Weve seen perfect weather up there and seen it where a couple storms blew threw. So it really just depends. Safety - we plan to have an emt that hangs out about half way. We also will absolutely require the buddy system. Groups even better. Everyone will pace different but we will want to all have someone. No one gets left alone. We will assign someone to bring up the rear. We will sign in an out as we start and finish. This is most definitely a challenge and will be tough. The way we like it! But we will have safety in mind. Everyone that starts will come off the mountain. We will make sure of that. But you need to come prepared. Thats in all aspects. https://eventbrite/e/kings-for-a-day-tickets-12124872821
