Kingston High School in the early 60s: I was an snotty nosed East Hull council house kid who sat his 11 plus exam with hopes of getting to that lovely school at the side of East Park (My mam). I passed and was sent to Kingston, two buses and an hours travel from my home off Southcoates Lane. The school liked to pretend it was a public school, not a grammar school. The masters all wore gowns, the first formers were referred to a fags, there was a tuck shop in the cricket equipment store and bullying was rife. Teachers were feared and dished out their own brand of corporal punishment at the drop of a pencil. It was co-ed but girls and boys were separated within the classroom and had separate entrances and playgrounds. A minimum of two hours a night homework was dished out with more at the weekend. My parents struggled to find money for the extensive school uniform and sports kit required by every student. I hated every minute of my five years there but it gave me the education that has stood me in such good stead for 50 years of work. I was taught that I could do anything if I worked at it.
