Kingussie Golf, Tuesday 13th to Saturday 17th August 2013 The last Men’s Senior Open of the season was played on Tuesday, an 18 hole Stableford, and a good field of over 60 players turned out, half of them visitors from as far north as Golspie and as far south as Oxfordshire. There was some excellent scoring and local member Alan Currie (19) just managed to win the day and the Andy Anderson Trophy with 40 points. Second with 39 pts was Barrie Syms (9, Muir of Ord), followed by two locals on 38: Ali Innes (21) and Andrew Brien (19). Three players scored 37: G Marshall (8, Rye Hill), local John McMorran (17) and D Spaven (10, Pitlochry). They were followed by no fewer than nine players with 36 points! In Wednesday’s Charity Medal, Jordan Shaw continued his remarkable sequence of scores. Having equalled the old course record of 61 less than a month ago, then setting a new record of 59 just ten days later, he returned a gross score of 62, seven strokes better than the CSS. Playing off a handicap of plus 1, his nett 63 won the charity medal by two strokes from Dallas Young (6) and Ali Dallas (5), both with nett 65. Keith Hunter (3) and John Crombie (11) with nett 66 and club captain Ross Grant (4) nett 67, also beat the CSS. Saturday was the occasion of the last Men’s Open of the season, the 36 hole Kingussie Open, sponsored by Falconer Contract Delivery. On a day of strong winds and heavy rain showers the players found good scoring difficult, as evidenced by the home CSS being a stroke above SSS in the morning and a further stroke above in the afternoon, with the visitors’ CSS being an extra shot above in both rounds. Nevertheless, visiting players took the first four places in the scratch competition. The overall scratch winner was David Joel (Inverness) 71 & 69, 140; second Norman Dyce (Strathmore) 70 & 71, 141; third Bill Urquart (Murcar Links) 69 & 74, 143; fourth A W Taylor (Kirriemuir) 72 & 73, 145. Further scores: 147 – Willie Fraser (Kingussie) 75 & 72, Laurie Chancellor (Inverness) 73 & 74, D G Smith (Kirriemuir) 72 & 75; 148 – Brian Shaw (Kingussie) 74 & 74; 149 – Keith Hunter (KIngussie) 73 & 76. David Joel received the Illingworth Trophy for best scratch score. Handicap results, division 1 (up to 9): 137 – Norman Dyce (2, Strathmore) 68 & 69; 138 – David Joel (1, Inverness) 70 & 68, Brian Shaw (5, Kingussie) 69 & 69, Alex Dawson (7, Kingussie) 65 & 73; 139 – Willie Fraser (4, Kingussie) 71 & 68, Ian Clark (7, Kingussie) 70 & 69, D G Smith (4, Kirriemuir) 68 & 71, Bill Urquart (2, Murcar Links) 67 & 72. Handicap results, division 2 ( 10 to 18): 136 – Ruaridh Wink (18, Kingussie) 63 & 73; 140 – Alan Lee (13, KIngussie) 70 & 70; 144 – John D MacPherson (12, Kingussie) 72 & 72; 145 – Ray Morris (12, Kingussie) 71 & 74. Ruaridh Wink’s scores were the more remarkable because, holding a handicap of 22, he had to concede four shots because of the competition limit of 18. Off his full handicap, his first round score would have been a nett 59! However his winning total in division 2 was also the best handicap score by a Kingussie member, for which he received the Sangster Trophy. He also received a four shot reduction in handicap!
