Kirkuk was always a predominantly Kurdish city with a very small - TopicsExpress

Kirkuk was always a predominantly Kurdish city with a very small Assyrian, Arab and Turkman population until Saddam enforced ruthless arabization programs and deported thousands from their homes, moving in Arabs. This was mainly due to the fact that the Kirkuk region is rich in oil so depopulating the Kurds would give Iraq more control over revenues. After the establishment of the Kurdish regional government, Iraq was supposed to return Kirkuk to Kurdish control but failed to comply and there were many instances where the Kurdish army and the Iraqi army were at a standoff, on the verge of war for this one city that was robbed from Kurds. The situation of Kirkuk was tough until ISIS attacked Iraq and the coward Iraqi army withdrew and left the city for ISIS terrorists so Kurds swiftly moved in and finally reclaimed control and have been rigorously defending the city from ISIS terrorists that are desperately trying to claim it. Naturally, the Arabs of the region are upset and so today during Kurdish flag day, as many proud Kurds were waving their flags, Arabs responded by waving ISIS flags. Heres a video of the very tense situation.
