Kirsty Reid has won the Elgin North by-election for the SNP. The council candidate totalled 850 votes, with Independent Sandy Cooper second on 693. Third was Craig Graham (Labour), fourth was Alex Griffiths (Conservative), fifth was Ramsay Urquhart (UKiP) and sixth was Morvern Forrest (Green Party). There was a turnout of 20.9% for the ballot. 1938 votes were cast altogether. The multi-member council ward, which extends from Bishopmill through Seafield, Linksfield, Kingsmills, East End, Pinefield, Tyock, Ashgrove, Moycroft, Chanonry and in the west Waulkmill, currently has one vacancy amongst its three elected members following the resignation of Labour councillor Barry Jarvis in October. With Ms Reids election, there will now be 10 SNP councillors on Moray Council. There are 11 Independent councillors, 3 Conservative councillors and two Labour councillors. The poll was conducted by single transferable vote (STV), where electors make their choice by marking their preference using numbers with 1 for their first choice, 2 for their second and so on rather than using a cross. The count was held at Elgin Town Hall..
